Across the United States, 1 in 68 children are being identified with Autism Spectrum Disorder, according to estimates done in 2014 by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.  Autism Spectrum Disorder is not a one-size-fits-all, there are many different symptoms, sensitivities and levels of functioning.  The design for One-in-68, a center for independent learning, works to prepare those with ASD by challenging them to grow past their limitations by providing areas for vocational and classroom learning.
Through evidenced based research we found that it would be ideal to design spaces primarily for the two extremes of the spectrum; which led to the parceling of quiet rooms and the integration of a sensory space and fitness gym.  In this center for independent living we emphasized the importance of providing resources for employment by incorporating classroom space, a computer lab, and a meeting room that can be used to perform mock interviews into the design.  In addition to these resources there is a mock apartment, cafe and kitchen, all which all focus on vocational and life skill development.
